“This Is Not Justice—It’s a Warning Shot”

Los Angeles, CA — The Los Angeles Chapter of Blacks in Technology (BiT) is responding to the recent $50 million settlement Google has agreed to pay in a class-action lawsuit alleging systemic racial bias against more than 4,000 Black employees in California and New York.

Though Google denies any wrongdoing, the settlement—stemming from a 2022 lawsuit filed by April Curley, a former Google diversity recruiter—outlines repeated acts of racial discrimination, including underpayment, lack of advancement opportunities, and stereotyping of Black employees. As part of the complaint, Curley alleged she was labeled as “angry,” denied promotions, and ultimately dismissed after six years, during which she attempted to document internal bias.

“This settlement is not justice—it’s a warning shot to the tech industry,” said Omari Bakari, President of the Blacks in Technology LA Chapter. “For decades, Black tech professionals have spoken out about being marginalized, overlooked, and shut out of the very innovation economy we help power. This case confirms what many of us already know: tech has a race problem that can no longer be swept under the rug.”

A Systemic Pattern, Not an Isolated Case

This settlement comes on the heels of a separate $28 million class-action agreement Google reached in March, regarding allegations that it favored white and Asian employees in pay and promotions. According to internal reports cited in the complaint, Black employees represented only 4.4% of Google’s workforce and a mere 3% of its leadership in 2021.

“These are not isolated incidents. They’re part of a culture,” said Omari. “The message is clear: Black professionals are welcomed into tech, but not uplifted. And when we push for equity, we are silenced or pushed out.”

Blacks in Technology LA Calls for Structural Change

The LA Chapter of BiT is calling for real accountability and transformative change across the tech industry. The organization outlined four core demands:

Transparent Hiring & Promotion Practices

Annual publication of DEI reports with demographic breakdowns, promotion rates, and pay equity audits.
Sustained Investment in Black Talent Pipelines

Genuine partnerships with HBCUs and Black-led tech orgs that extend beyond recruitment to career development and leadership tracks.
Independent Oversight

External auditing, accountability mechanisms, and protections for whistleblowers.
Long-Term Reparative Action

Major investments in Black tech entrepreneurship, K-12 STEM education, and workforce development, especially through local BiT chapters.

“Don’t Invite Us—Stop Excluding Us”

“This isn’t about ‘diversity,’ it’s about dismantling structural exclusion,” added Omari. “We are not asking to be included in the future of tech. We are demanding the industry stop standing in our way.”

Dr. Batie, a visionary educator and founder of STEM 54, has developed a series of innovative programs aimed at addressing these gaps. Through initiatives like the Abacus program, math camps, and structured study sessions, Dr. Batie has empowered young Black students to not only improve their math skills but also build the foundation needed for successful careers in engineering and STEM-related fields.

One of the standout initiatives under STEM 54 is Dr. Batie’s Math Camp for Aspiring Engineers , designed specifically to nurture the talents of young people with an interest in pursuing STEM careers. The camp provides intensive training in mathematics, with a focus on enhancing both fundamental and advanced skills. Students are exposed to hands-on learning experiences, guided by expert instructors, and supported by a strong community of peers and mentors. Program Offers Valuable STEM Opportunities for Local Youth

LOS ANGELES, CA — Blacks in Technology (BIT) Los Angeles Chapter is excited to announce the launch of the STEM 54/WellDan Math Camp, a unique opportunity designed for aspiring engineers. In partnership with STEM 54 and WillDan, this initiative will help local youth develop essential math skills, gain hands-on experience, and prepare for careers in engineering and other STEM fields.

The camp kicks off with a math assessment and orientation on November 29, 2024 , and will run through winter and spring breaks. The program includes a series of 5-day intensive sessions during both winter break (December 16 - January 3) and spring break (April 12 - April 20) , as well as weekly Saturday sessions between the two holiday breaks. Each participant will receive a laptop and a $100 gift certificate , while the top-performing student will be awarded a summer internship with WillDan , offering real-world experience in the engineering field.

Anti-Affirmative Action Decision's Impact on the Tech Industry Recruiting Practices

To counter this, Tech firms will need to expand recruitment efforts to reach a broader pool of talent and utilize technology solutions to more accurately and equitably assess talent.

When many firms are facing increased budget scrutiny and financial performance pressure, technology solutions that increase the scope and efficiency of recruiting as well as the accuracy and fairness of hiring are a key resource successfully used by many industries, but still virtually untapped in the legal industry.

In addition to moral arguments, a lack of diversity in schools and workplaces harms business and economic performance. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Chair Charlotte A. Burrows issued a statement making explicit the impact this ruling has on businesses and our economy. “[This] decision…will undoubtedly hamper the efforts…to ensure diverse student bodies. That’s a problem for our economy because businesses often rely on colleges and universities to provide a diverse pipeline of talent for recruitment and hiring. Diversity helps companies attract top talent, sparks innovation, improves employee satisfaction, and enables companies to better serve their customers.”

What may seem more acutely an admissions challenge for schools is clearly a looming problem for the broader legal industry. This ruling will affect the demographics of future classes of lawyers. Fewer law students of color on campuses means fewer potential summer associates and candidates of color for law firms. Law School Admission Council President Kellye Testy expressed a call to action for “all of us in legal education, at bar associations, and in practice…to redouble efforts to make sure the entire pre-law to practice pipeline is better.”

How Technology Can Help

Candidates of color are already underrepresented in schools today, and the removal of race-conscious admissions will further exacerbate the situation. Tech firms will need to consider candidates from a substantially larger number of schools than they do today. Increasing the volume of candidates to consider and schools to recruit from is a tall order on already resource-strapped recruiting staff.

Tech firms can leverage our tools to help broaden their funnels to include and consider more candidates. Virtual interviewing platforms enable firms to evaluate candidates without the constraints of travel budgets or time out of the office for candidates. Other providers can enable access to networks of candidates, which extend the access of any one firm well beyond their own efforts. Technologies like these can significantly boost top-of-funnel representation and provide greater diversity throughout the process. Based on our client data, on average, clients that leverage innovative solutions, like the BIT Job Board, to extend their efforts see an approximate 300% increase in candidates from underrepresented groups in their pipelines.

Expanding access to talent is only one part of the challenge. How firms evaluate candidates (e.g., school rank, GPA, and interviews) once they’re in the pipeline comes with its own challenges. In a recent analysis of law firms, we found that school rank, GPA, and other resume data taken all together have less than a 10% correlation to an attorney’s actual on-the-job performance. It’s a sobering statistic that underlines the need for firms to reach beyond these traditional factors to improve hiring decisions and firm diversity.

Technology Is the Game Changer You Need

Tech firm recruiting methods are under greater scrutiny given the changing landscape caused by the Supreme Court affirmative action decision. This creates both urgency and opportunity to build better hiring practices that withstand legal scrutiny and deliver stronger, more diverse talent.

Firms that implement a more data-driven hiring process have already made headway in expanding access to talent. Use of technology and artificial intelligence can result in improvements in law firm retention rates despite the high attrition rates experienced over the past couple years. In the face of macroeconomic and political uncertainty, the legal industry has an opportunity to set the example for changes in recruiting, hiring, retention, and professional development. By considering alternative solutions that broaden networks for sourcing talent and new models for developing talent, law firms can lessen the negative impact of the recent affirmative action ruling and build stronger, more diverse, inclusive, and competitive firms of the future.

The Anti-Affirmative Action Movement Jeopardizes Programs like the LAUSD's BSAP

“But I'm not all Black. I'm part Asian.”

Kendall, a black high school senior in the Los Angeles Unified School District, was defending herself after being mocked over blacks’ low status in American education.

The students weren't ganging up on Kendall. It was part of some semi-amicable, before the bell, back-and-forth trash talking at which Kendall is quite skilled.

Yet the underlying point was still striking–at 17, this girl feels that being Black is not something to be proud of, and the quickest way to defend herself is to say she’s not completely Black.

According to California pre-pandemic (2018-19) figures, only 1/3 of Black students in the state met the English language arts standards, compared to nearly 2/3rds of whites. In math, 21% of blacks met the standard, compared to 54% of whites. Yet there has never been a dedicated effort to address Black students' needs in California .

LAUSD’s Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP) is a new program to address what it describes as the “perennial trend of Black student underperformance.”

In the current backlash against Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Programs, opposition to programs like the BSAP has become ideologically de rigueur for American conservatives. With Black History Month approaching, attacks on the BSAP and similarly motivated programs are intensifying.

For example, in “ LA Schools Are Funding for Failure ”, City Journal contributing editor Heather Mac Donald, long one of America's premier critics of teachers unions and public education, lays out the case against BSAP which, she writes, ”requires princely sums” of public funding.

Moreover, the “BSAP bankrolls counselors, climate advocates, and psychiatric social workers to work with black students in ‘high priority’ schools” while the “possessors of these sinecures are hidden from sight, far from the classroom.”

Those who are not in the education field may read some of these job titles and think the district is squandering tax dollars by hiring people for jobs that are ill-defined or of limited utility. In fact, BSAP helps fill a gaping need.

The foster care/group home student population in LAUSD schools is disproportionately black. A rung above them is a somewhat similar cohort of black students who are not in the foster care system, but who live in poverty and/or under other difficult conditions, and whose overwhelmed parents or guardians maintain limited control over them. Some in each of these two groups have spent time in the juvenile justice system, and most have poor academic records.

Despite this, my experience as a teacher has been that many of them are quite bright and capable. They often start out well in class, in part because of the inordinate amount of attention I can temporarily give them. Within weeks, however, they often begin to sink academically. Why?

Group home students are accustomed to bouncing from one school to another, despite LAUSD’s efforts to allow them to stay in their school of origin . Other students frequently move around because of family economic instability and the high cost of housing in Los Angeles. Without much hope of building an educational life for themselves in any one school, they sometimes ditch classes or school altogether.

With students in group homes, a teacher’s or a school’s efforts to hold the students accountable are often frustrated by some foster care agencies’ attitudes that any school-related issues are the school’s problem, not theirs.

Sometimes these students do something thoughtlessly stupid – “knuckleheaded” in our lingo – and get in trouble for it, disrupting the academic continuity already so elusive for them.

Many of these students face weighty family issues. Some take these problems to their teachers, but we are not trained in psychology or social work, and sometimes don’t know how to get these students and their families access to the resources they need.

What these kids need is oversight . They need counselors and social workers who can build relationships with them, help them stay on track, and talk and walk them out of trouble. Much of BSAP’s funding is devoted to hiring the personnel to provide these crucial services.

According to EdSource , Kamal Chatman, a senior at Hamilton High School in LAUSD, “feels like there is more accountability for him and his peers, and he has been able to build a better connection with his [BSAP] counselor than with his usual academic counselors in the past.”

Chatman says BSAP personnel, “don’t let me fall off…they’re always checking in.”

Another of Mac Donald’s criticisms of the BSAP and the money spent on it is that “Any school system that can afford climate advocates (as part of a black uplift plan, no less) is not hurting for taxpayer dollars.”

It’s unclear if Mac Donald understands that this means an advocate for school climate, not the earth’s climate, but school climate advocates reduce truancies by working to make school a place students want to be. They also aid in resolving conflicts and preventing fights. While Mac Donald seems to begrudge them their modest earnings , in my experience these are sincere people committed to students’ well-being.

BSAP’s detractors may be surprised to learn that BSAP’s Theory of Action largely stresses, albeit with different phrasing and terminology, many of the things they advocate: academic rigor, accountability, valuing education, and family responsibility.

To be fair to critics, from the outside, it can be hard to understand just how badly the deck is stacked against many low-income students. For some families, just having a teenager spending their time in school eight hours a day, much less spending time studying and on afterschool activities, is a luxury they struggle to afford.

We see teenagers working weeknights until midnight (in contravention of the law) to help their parents pay the rent. Girls, in particular, often bear the burden of caring for younger siblings. Some students do their homework after midnight because it is the only time they can have quiet and privacy. Many value the free meals they get at school because their meals at home are irregular.

Black students and their communities often need more than what schools can provide. Within the limits of what schools can do, the BSAP addresses the genuine needs of LAUSD’s black students.

Why "Affirmative Action" Matters for Black America

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) have become the watchwords for addressing racial disparities in workplaces and educational institutions. While these concepts are crucial, the term "Affirmative Action" holds a specific historical weight and ongoing relevance for the Black American experience.

A Legacy of Exclusion:

Before the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Black Americans faced blatant segregation and discrimination in education and employment. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were established by necessity, not by choice, as Black students were barred from most white institutions.

The Promise of Affirmative Action:

President Lyndon B. Johnson's 1965 Howard University speech, often cited as the birth of Affirmative Action, recognized this history: "You do not pick the baby up in the middle of the race and say, 'Here you go!' You are six yards behind." Affirmative Action aimed to bridge this gap by actively recruiting and promoting qualified Black candidates.

Beyond Numbers:

DEI focuses on creating a diverse workforce and fostering inclusion. However, Affirmative Action arose from a need to address not just a lack of representation, but a system actively designed to exclude Black Americans. It acknowledges the lingering effects of past discrimination and the systemic barriers that persist.

DEI can encompass initiatives for women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other underrepresented groups. Affirmative Action, however, was specifically created to address the unique historical and ongoing challenges faced by Black Americans.

Addressing Skepticism:

Critics point to Affirmative Action benefiting unqualified candidates. However, studies by the National Bureau of Economic Research show minimal negative impact on white applicants and positive outcomes for Black graduates' salaries and careers.

Affirmative Action: A Stepping Stone:

The ultimate goal of Affirmative Action is not to create a permanent handout, but to level the playing field. As Black professionals gain experience and build legacies, the need for specific race-conscious hiring practices may decrease.

Beyond Metrics:

DEI often focuses on achieving specific diversity metrics. Affirmative Action, however, recognizes the importance of cultural competency and fostering inclusive work environments.

The Future of Equity:

The conversation shouldn't be "DEI vs. Affirmative Action." They can work in tandem. DEI can broaden the scope of inclusion, while Affirmative Action ensures Black Americans have a fair shot at overcoming historical disadvantages.

A Call to Action:

For Black Americans, "Affirmative Action" remains a powerful symbol of the ongoing fight for racial equity. It's a reminder of the past struggles, a recognition of present challenges, and a commitment to a future where opportunity truly is equal.

By understanding the historical context and unique needs of the Black American experience, we can create a more inclusive future where both DEI and Affirmative Action work in harmony towards a just and equitable society.

The Troubling Retreat from Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives

Observing the unfolding events in our society, I’m exasperated by the unrelenting assault on the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that have been painstakingly built over the years. It's as if we are witnessing a full-scale retreat from the principles that were meant to bring about a more just and equal America, and it's disheartening to see organizations, particularly those designed to uplift, support or defend Black Americans, again being caught off guard.

The anti-Black storm has regained strength and momentum since the Court decision in Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) v. Harvard , and SFFA v. University of North Carolina , effectively eliminating the use of race as a factor in college admissions.

On August 4, 2023, the America First Legal Foundation (AFLF) filed a lawsuit against the Small Business Administration (SBA), challenging the constitutionality of the SBA's 8(a) program on the same grounds. Four days later, the Center for Equal Opportunity, a conservative think tank, filed a similar lawsuit against Hello Alice, a Black and women-focused business support platform.

Separately, Sen. Tom Cotton and Republican State Attorneys General joined the anti-Black movement, along with Steven Miller, the former Trump advisor and now president of the AFLF. Ed Blum, founder and president of SFFA, is also on board, filing lawsuits nationwide that DEI is illegal. Collectively they’ve already targeted 200 law schools, 150 colleges, 51 “top” law firms, CEOs of Fortune 100 companies, and 21 of America’s favorite brands including McDonalds, Starbucks, Anheuser Busch, Nordstrum, Kellogg’s and Major League Baseball.

In Los Angeles, literally just days before submitting this article, we learned that the anti-Black movement had targeted the LA Unified School District’s (LAUSD), Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP), a comprehensive plan to improve the academic achievement of Black students. But for Governor Newsom’s veto, last year’s California Senate bill that prohibited the LAUSD from implementing the BSAP, would have become law.

“Learn to read the present more carefully than you need to.”

Are right-thinking people not reading the present well enough and this assault is simply being overlooked? What next will silently disappear - federal funding for HBCUs?

Where’s our Paul Revere declaring “The Rednecks are Coming!” ? We need a clarion call, a war manifesto, a Black "MAGA" equivalency to rally our base to the reality that war has been declared against Black people.

From the Black Panthers to Black Lives Matter, these movements have been born out of necessity. Who will lead this time? HBCU law schools? Out of work DEI professionals? Ben Crump, “Black America’s lawyer”?

A smart but disturbing tactic they use is targeting organizations that will quietly cave in and settle, rather than fight for higher ideals. It's embarrassing to see large, powerful law firms that used to protect our flanks, capitulate so easily. The irony is palpable: unless someone Black is paying their fees, there’s no fight. No money, no backbone.

It’s an existential threat to organizations like Blacks in Technology - and its Los Angeles chapter, whose initiatives are aligned with the SmartLA 2028 goals and challenges. Those noble efforts to eliminate the conspicuous imbalances of race in LA that promote workforce development, digital equity, and digital literacy may be next in the crosshairs.

“Don’t talk about it, just do it.”

The SFFA decision did not overturn established employment law, which permits the use of DEI programs to address “conspicuous imbalances of race and gender” in a workforce (without using quotas or other discrimination). However, Chief Justice Roberts' suggestion that race must be proven to have affected a Black person's life created a conundrum: historically, being Black in America has been negative by its very nature, so why today should 44.4 million Black people need to prove nature again in court? Of course our Blackness has affected our lives. We’re way past that point.

Instead of returning to a period of benign neglect, public and private employers should strategize on how to achieve DEI without neon lights. As the saying goes, "don't talk about it, be about it”, and just do it! Shift, say less, and become invisible to these frivolous lawsuits. Instead of proclaiming, use industry-specific approaches, unconscious bias training, job fairs, community outreach, and stronger partnerships.

This is a call to arms for the defense of the unique rights that should be afforded Blacks, particularly in America. As I’ve demonstrated, the anti-Black movement is alive, widespread and well funded. Let’s raise a $100 million legal defense fund to fight back in courtrooms, boardrooms and classrooms across America.

The debate over the benefits of DEI is over; the evidence is clear. Less talking and more doing. DEI must remain at the forefront of our society so shut out the noise and just do it!

Unmasking the Duplicity of Anti-Affirmative Action Funders

As an organization, BiT-LA exists because too often Black tech workers find themselves as the only Black person in the room or on their team. Yet this “conspicuous imbalance” of race lies at the heart of the troubling trend of disappearing DEI initiatives across America following this summer’s Supreme Court’s decision that race-based affirmative action (in college admissions) is unlawful.

Attacks are continuing and losses are mounting across every industry. In the tech sector, similar lawsuits were already pending against Microsoft and Google. A couple weeks ago, the behemoth law firms of Morrison & Foerster and Perkins Coie canceled their programs. A month earlier (8/4/23), the America First Legal Foundation (led by Steven Miller, former President Trump’s advisor) sued the Small Business Administration, challenging the constitutionality of its 8(a) program on similar grounds. Thereafter, the Center for Equal Opportunity, a conservative think tank, sued Hello Alice, a Black and women-focused venture fund on similar grounds.

And that was just the tip of the iceberg: in total, over 200 law schools, 53 top law firms, CEOs of Fortune 100 companies and 21 of America’s favorite brands (Starbucks, McDonalds, Major League Baseball, etc) are now either targets or have canceled their DEI programs. These ongoing lawsuits raise important questions about how organizations like BiT-LA should respond.

According to Sun Szu’s Art of War, the most essential factor in determining victory is to know yourself and your opponent. Neither size, nor how well-equipped an opponent was, were mentioned as deciding factors for victory. Instead, know how to identify and attack the vulnerability of your opponent. The Asian strategy that comes to mind is to “Remove the Firewood from Under the Cooking Pot.” As it goes, when facing a pot of boiling water, the force of the boiling water can be fierce and unmanageable. So instead of dealing with the hot water directly, one should step back and discover the real source of the water’s force; the firewood. By removing the firewood from under the cooking pot, the water’s fury will calm. In other words, what may appear to be the source of one’s strength can often also be the source of one’s weakness.

Likewise, in the struggle to combat the well-financed anti-affirmative action movement, the money beneath it is the firewood under the boiling pot of racism. That is the vulnerability - the complicated web of “charitable giving” - where funders simultaneously support both DEI initiatives and anti-DEI initiatives. This practice, characterized as ‘duplicity in philanthropy’ IS the vulnerability to target. It is the source of their weakness and will lead to their defeat. But I’m left wondering whether the Blacks in leadership of those philanthropies are part of the anti movement, or just asleep at the wheel.

Tackling duplicity in philanthropy requires a multi-pronged approach. You can: (1) demand transparency in philanthropic giving and highlight instances of hypocrisy; (2) use public shaming to make sure their stakeholders, employees, and the public are aware of the contradiction between their public image and their financial contributions; (3) form alliances with like-minded organizations, and reach out to donors who may not be fully aware of how their contributions are being used; (4) use corporate social pressure campaigns to align their actions with their stated values; (5) advocate for stronger laws that require transparency in charitable giving; (6), use boycotts and divestment; and (7) collaborate with investigative journalists to uncover and report on instances of duplicity.

Ultimately, it is time for the leaders and members of BiT-LA and other progressive organizations that were created to address historic imbalances of Black access to jobs, schools, and funding to answer the call. Fighting against duplicity in philanthropy is essential for upholding the integrity of DEI initiatives and holding entities accountable for their actions. It's a collective effort that requires your commitment to fight for public awareness, advocacy, transparency and fairness.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Under Siege

As I observe the unfolding events in our society, I can't help but feel exasperated by the seemingly relentless assault on the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that have been painstakingly built over the years. It's as if we are witnessing a full-scale retreat from the principles that were meant to bring about a more just and equal America, and it's disheartening to see organizations, particularly those designed to uplift minority groups like Black Americans, caught off guard.

The recent wave of lawsuits targeting DEI initiatives is nothing short of an existential threat to organizations like Blacks in Technology - and its Los Angeles chapter - whose initiatives are dedicated to providing LA technology firms with reliable, professional resources to meet the growing industry needs, also exists to promote digital equity, workforce development, and digital literacy to help Black people to thrive in a digital economy and society.

The anti-Black storm has been brewing since the Supreme Court upended established equal protection law with its decision in SFFA v. Harvard and SFFA v. UNC, effectively eliminating the use of affirmative action in college admission. The news is that the storm is gaining momentum with each passing day.

Closer to home, this movement has targeted a variety of academic programs designed to assist underserved Black students, including the Los Angeles Unified School District’s (LAUSD), Black Student Achievement Plan (BSAP). The BSAP is a comprehensive plan to improve the academic achievement of Black students in the LAUSD. The plan was adopted in 2016 in response to data showing that Black students were underperforming their peers in all areas of academic achievement. In 2021, a group of parents filed a lawsuit against the LAUSD, alleging that the BSAP was discriminatory and violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. In 2022, the California State Senate passed a bill that would have prohibited the LAUSD from implementing the BSAP. Although the bill was vetoed by Governor Gavin Newsom this certainly signals future attacks by conservative politicians and commentators is on the rise. While the lawsuit is still ongoing, the future of the BSAP and other academic programs to assist underperforming Black students are daunting.

This program provides preferential treatment to small businesses owned by women, minorities, veterans, and other socially disadvantaged groups. Just four days later, the Center for Equal Opportunity (CEO), a conservative think tank, filed a lawsuit against Hello Alice, a women-focused business support platform, claiming that race-based criteria used in selecting program participants is unconstitutional.

Senator Tom Cotton and Republican State Attorneys General have joined this anti-Black movement, further stoking the flames of division. The war against Black people had been officially re-declared by Steven Miller, the former Trump administration advisor and now president of the AFLF. Ed Blum, founder and president of Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA), is also on board, filing lawsuits challenging affirmative action programs in higher education. The question on everyone's mind should be: Who's next? Will federal funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) be targeted next? What about Big Tech companies, philanthropic organizations, or federal, state, and local government programs?

It's time for a clarion call, a war manifesto, a Black "MAGA" equivalent to rally our base to the reality that war has been declared against Black people. Historically, Black communities have organized to defend against institutionally racist incursions. From the Black Panthers to Black Lives Matter, these movements have been born out of necessity. But who will lead the charge now? Will it be HBCU law schools, or the DEI professionals who are now out of work due to these legal challenges, or Ben Crump, Black America’s lawyer?

One disturbing tactic employed by the anti-Black proponents is to target organizations that are most likely to cave in and settle, rather than fight for higher ideals. It's embarrassing to see large, powerful law firms capitulate so easily. The irony is palpable: unless someone is paying for their protection, they seem to have no interest. It's high time they are called out and boycotted for their lack of backbone.

The SFFA decision did not overturn decades of established employment law, which allows companies to use DEI programs to address racial and gender imbalances in their workforce without resorting to quotas or discrimination against individuals. However, Chief Justice John Roberts' suggestion that race must be proven to have affected someone's life creates a dangerous presumption that race did not affect their life. Imagine the onslaught that will follow as certain media outlets exploit individuals' stories to sway public opinion against the very notion that Black people have ever been discriminated against or that they suffer from the effects of institutional bias. It's a dangerous narrative that threatens to erase our painful history.

Corporate America should focus on the benefits of DEI in the workplace and strategize on how to achieve it without making grandiose statements. As the saying goes, "don't talk about it, just do it." By shifting the policy to say less about their efforts, companies can avoid becoming targets for these frivolous lawsuits. We must find ways to maintain the benefits of DEI in the workforce despite the anti-Black movement. This won't happen on its own; we need industry-specific approaches, unconscious bias training, job fairs, community outreach, and stronger partnerships with HBCUs. Changing public opinion is also vital, and we need a robust fundraising campaign and a war chest for litigation and public outreach.

The debate over the benefits of diversity and inclusion is over; the evidence is clear. So let's stop talking and start doing. It's time for all Americans to come together to ensure that diversity and inclusion remain at the forefront of our society.

Class is over, and 've all graduated; now, let’s shut out the noise and just do it!

In a world where the ideals of democracy sometimes seem distant, recent events, such as the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the consideration of race in hiring decisions, remind us that the path to a just and inclusive society is not without its challenges. As the President of Blacks in Technology Los Angeles chapter, I want to address you with a resounding message: Together, we can be the agents of change that our community and our nation need!

The recent Supreme Court decision opportunity in case has shaken the foundation of equal opportunity for Black people in America. It has underscored the importance of our mission at BIT LA and the significance of our upcoming Accelerate BlackLA Tech Job Fair, which marks the beginning of Black History Month. This event is not just about creating job opportunities; it's about standing up for a future where merit and talent are the sole determinants of success, regardless of one's racial or ethnic background.

We are all too familiar with the disparities that persist in our society, affecting areas from healthcare and education to housing and public safety. While steps have been taken to address these issues, it is disheartening to witness resistance to the principle of justice for Black America. At BIT LA, we firmly believe that diversity and inclusion are not mere buzzwords but fundamental principles that drive innovation and excellence.

Los Angeles boasts the fastest-growing and highest-paying tech industry in the nation, yet it continues to grapple with exclusionary hiring practices. The tech industry leaders say there is a lack of Black talent to hire from. It's time to shatter the barriers of discrimination and embrace a future where opportunities are truly equal for everyone.

The Black community possesses a vast and highly qualified talent pool, and we, at Blacks in Technology, take immense pride in curating a membership of over 25,000 professionals. This includes HBCU graduates, returning Black veterans, and other tech enthusiasts from the BIPOC community.

As Angelinos, we possess the power to drive change and seize the opportunities that lie ahead. Los Angeles is on the cusp of remarkable achievements, with the SmartLA 2028 Initiative and the upcoming LA2028 XXXVII Olympiad offering a glimpse into the boundless possibilities. These events are more than just milestones; they are opportunities waiting to be harnessed.

We're thrilled to share another inspiring update from the Los Angeles chapter of Blacks in Technology. Today, we're shining a spotlight on our partnership with the Black Student Achievement Program (BSAP) at Dorsey High School. It's a collaboration that aims to make a real impact on the lives of young Black students and empower them for success.

A Beacon of Hope for Black Student Success The Black Student Achievement Program at Dorsey High School is on a mission to elevate graduation rates among Black students. Its innovative approach revolves around five key tenets: strengthening black families, fostering cultural awareness, providing comprehensive student support, promoting academic excellence, and nurturing Black excellence. It's a holistic strategy that recognizes the importance of not only academic achievement but also the personal growth and cultural enrichment of each student.

"Empower" Program Launch We are excited to announce that Blacks in Technology will be spearheading a groundbreaking program at Dorsey High School, titled "Empower: Elevating African American Excellence Through Media, Culture, Technology, STEM, and Mental Health." This program reflects our commitment to equipping African American students with the skills and mindset needed to thrive in a world that doesn't always offer a level playing field.

Program Overview: Empower "Empower" is a comprehensive initiative that focuses on four interconnected pillars:

Media and Technology Literacy: In an increasingly digital world, media and technology literacy are essential. Our program will empower students with the knowledge and skills to navigate the digital landscape, fostering both critical thinking and creativity. By understanding and harnessing the power of media and technology, students will be better equipped for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
Cultural Enrichment - Southern California's Black History: Understanding one's cultural heritage is key to building a strong sense of identity and belonging. STEM Education: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields offer incredible opportunities for growth and innovation. With guidance and mentorship from BIT members, students will gain valuable insights into the world of STEM.
Mental Health Support: Academic success is closely tied to mental well-being. Transforming Dorsey High School's Journalism Program into a Media Center through Technology and Collaboration

Our first step was engaging with the students during two Advisory sessions held on campus. Many of them had just returned from an eye-opening HBCU Tour in Atlanta, where they discovered new possibilities and were eager to continue their educational journey. With the goal of enrolling more students into next year's BSAP program with our organization, BIT-LA, we are pleased to announce that 15 students have already joined us.

What makes this program even more remarkable is the wide range of student interests. From aspiring journalists to tech enthusiasts, many of these students have a strong desire to explore the impact of technology on their lives and communities. Our mission is to guide and expose them to a path towards success, one that highlights the transformative power of technology.

To facilitate this journey, a generous grant has provided us with the necessary resources. New laptops, iPads, digital cameras, and a license to build a progressive web app have been granted to the school. These tools will enable us to convert the abandoned campus newspaper into a vibrant and accessible digital media center that serves students, faculty, and parents alike.

Over the past two weeks, I have had the privilege of participating in the Dorsey HS Black Student Achievement Program. Witnessing the enthusiasm and determination of these students has been inspiring, and I am eagerly looking forward to the upcoming Fall Semester. As seniors, these students are preparing to take the next step in their education, with many planning to attend historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs).

Through our collaboration, we aim to empower these students and equip them with the necessary skills to thrive in the digital age. By bridging the gap between technology and education, we are opening doors of opportunity and fostering a new generation of leaders who will shape our communities for the better.

The Blacks In Technology Los Angeles Chapter presents the Silicon Beach Parties - a networking mixer in direct view of the most perfect sunset on the west coast. Our partners, the staff at Oceans Cafe and Grill , provide a relaxing environment for our guest speaker, entertainment, great food spirits and California’s beautiful sunset. All together, the Silicon Beach Parties are the perfect place to network and discover new opportunities with exciting people.

At these networking events, we’ll showcase tech companies who have taken the Black Tech Pledge. Introduce HR Executives to discuss hiring practices, introduce new partners and sponsors. Acknowledge Black Excellence and new members. Promote our event raffle with awesome door prizes and announce upcoming events.

A Joint Effort Among Several Black-Led Non-Profit Organizations to Increase the Representation of Black Tech Workers in the Industry.

Los Angeles, CA - The Black Tech Pledge, a joint initiative among several Black-led non-profit organizations, has launched in Los Angeles to increase the representation of Black tech workers in the industry. The pledge provides a standard of hiring, promoting, retaining, developing, and celebrating Black tech workers, and is a non-legally binding sign of intention to promote diversity and inclusion of Black professionals. The initiative is a call to action for business leaders and companies across the country and the globe to create an inclusive work environment and promote career growth for Black people.

The launch of the Black Tech Pledge in Los Angeles comes at a critical time when the tech industry is facing increasing scrutiny for its lack of diversity and inclusion. Despite the fact that Black people make up over 13% of the US population, only 5% of technology professionals across the country are Black. In C-level positions and board rooms, less than 2% of leaders are Black, and even less are women of color. The Black Tech Pledge aims to "stomp the divide" between Black tech workers and to fundamentally influence and effect change on an industry that has historically not sought parity with respect to Black workers.

Companies that sign the Black Tech Pledge make a commitment to create (or maintain) a more inclusive environment for people of African descent. By signing the pledge, they become a signatory of a symbolic badge of pride that represents the commitment to the advancement and promotion of Black people in technology and within their organization. The pledge not only increases visibility of their commitment, but it also establishes credibility among Black consumers and organizations, which ultimately drives business growth and success.

The launch of the Black Tech Pledge in Los Angeles provides an opportunity for companies to gain access to a diverse talent pool, improve employee engagement, make a positive social impact, and collaborate with other organizations that support diversity and inclusion in tech. The initiative also provides an opportunity for Black tech workers to have their voices heard and to be recognized for their contributions to the industry.

In addition to taking the pledge, companies can participate in the social impact study, support events with resources, opportunities, and/or funding, and participate in Diversity & Inclusion workshops, seminars, and webinars. The Black Tech Pledge is a powerful tool for promoting diversity and inclusion in tech, and its launch in Los Angeles marks an important step towards creating a more inclusive and diverse tech industry.

Promoting Workforce Development and Digital Equity: Blacks in Technology Los Angeles Chapter Initiatives for 2023

The Los Angeles Chapter of Blacks in Technology (BIT-LA) has several initiatives and programs aimed at promoting workforce development, digital equity, and digital literacy. One such initiative is the Black Tech Month Job Fair, which is a virtual event designed to attract global talent to the Los Angeles job market. The fair will feature over 75 tech employers in a 3-D Metaverse Environment and have pre-event webinars, panel discussions, roundtables, and live stream interviews.

Another initiative is the Accelerate Black LA Program (ABLA), which is a lean startup virtual accelerator that co-founds 15 start-ups annually in a 2-year cohort. The program provides financial and operational investments, training, and resources to support these ventures through their most crucial development years. The program focuses on companies whose technologies and ventures address issues in healthcare (including mental health), civic and tourism, sports and entertainment in the City of Los Angeles.

BIT-LA also has a Youth Tech Camp in partnership with Key of Knowledge, STEM 54, and DIPS Technology. The camp provides hands-on experience in robotics, drones and solar energy, and aims to introduce young people to technology and encourage them to pursue careers in the field.

Additionally, BIT-LA runs a Senior Citizen Computer Camp, which is a self-paced learning experience for seniors in a structured environment. The goal of this program is to help seniors engage with technology via a personal computer, making community services, resources, public health and safety, and emergency services available to them in their homes or on the go.

BIT-LA's initiatives and programs aim to provide opportunities and support for Black individuals and communities in the technology industry, and to promote digital equity and literacy in the Los Angeles area.

The tech industry has a well-documented problem with diversity, and this lack of representation is particularly acute for Black people. In fact, Black individuals made up just 9% of those employed in STEM occupations according to a 2021 Pew Research Center report.

It’s also noteworthy that there has been no change in the share of Black workers in STEM jobs since 2016. This lack of diversity has serious consequences, both for the industry itself and for Black professionals working in tech.

Fortunately, there are organizations actively working to change this. OneTen’s mission is to hire, promote and advance one million Black individuals who do not have a four-year degree into family-sustaining careers over the next ten years. The Blacks in Technology Foundation (BIT) is an organization that provides resources, education, and mentorship to Black people who are either in the tech industry or looking to become a part of it.

BIT/ONETEN Coalition Partner with Udacity with Workforce Development Scholarships

Last year Blacks in Technology Foundation awarded over 5,000 scholarships and we are starting this year with a collaboration with ONETEN and their goal is to employ one million Black folk in the Tech Industry.

If you’re a member of the African-American community with an interest in tech and you don't have a four-year degree, this scholarship program is for you.

The OneTen/BIT Scholarship Program aims to help eager learners looking to advance their skills in business analytics, digital marketing, or front end web development and prepare for an exciting, high-paying career in tech.

The tech industry offers some of the fastest-growing and in-demand employment opportunities today. But these opportunities have been unequal and exclusionary—especially for people of color and people without four-year degrees.

OneTen, the Blacks In Technology Foundation, and Udacity are teaming up to create change. This program aims to give Black learners without four-year degrees family-sustaining and generational wealth-building opportunities while also disrupting the status quo.

“Our Niche: Promoting Black Excellence in the Tech Industry During Black History Month”

In 1986 Congress passed Public Law 99-244 which made the observation of Black History throughout the month of February. Its origins come from 1915 when Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week for America to acknowledge the contributions that Black people in this great country. Today Black America celebrates the entire month by promoting and sharing Black Facts and stories about our past in America.

A lot of the contributions Black Americans have made were industrial, health, transportation, commercial and technological. One of our goals and advocacies is to promote Black Excellence in Technology. So starting this February Blacks in Technology Foundation will celebrate Black excellence and leadership in technology the entire month with a hash tag #BlackTechMonth.

Blacks in Technology Foundation is a growing national organization with both domestic and international membership. The Foundation’s focus and appeal are directly connected to its workforce development programs, apprenticeships, training and certifications. The total sum of the Foundation’s development has created a pipeline, a curated talent pool, that disrupts the current recruiting culture of today’s tech industry.

Throughout the entire month we will celebrate #BlackTechMonth by promoting Black excellence - executives, leaders and founders. SmartMatch App Membership Management Platform

BIT Foundation has selected the Los Angeles chapter to run the beta SmartMatch App member management platform

We are honored to have been selected to run the membership management platform beta. This will allow us to provide the best possible services, resources and access to equity in the tech industry. We are looking forward to working with the SmartMatch App team to develop and design a data structure that allows both members and employers to easily access the right candidate from our talent pool.

We encourage all chapter members to participate in the process because your engagement will help us discover and define the best uses for this platform to serve our membership. We will develop the same types of opportunities to provide information for both members and employers. This will include uploading resumes, biographies, job descriptions, demonstrations, video, photo and other forms of media.

Filling the $28.9 Billion Digital Equity Gap with the BIT Talent Pool Pipeline

On April 24th, 2023, the Los Angeles Chapter of Blacks in Technology will launch its first Accelerate BlackLA Virtual Job Fair in an immersive metaverse virtual environment.

The job fair seeks to showcase opportunities in the Los Angeles tech industry as well as other industries that rely on tech employees. We will introduce our pipeline of talented candidates to the tech industry in southern California. We have over 54,000 members, HBCU graduates and veterans in our pipeline's talent pool.

We are planning to have over 60 Employers offering employment opportunities for Software, Programmers, Web and QA; Tech Manufacturing; IT Support Specialists and Repair Technicians; Telecommunications & Internet Services; Network Engineers, Architects and Support. Cybersecurity and Systems Engineers, Database, and Data Science.

Unlike other markets and regions across the nation, the tech industry in California in general and Los Angeles specifically is not only thriving, but it’s on an uptick. The tech industry makes up 18.9% of California’s economy and 10.33% of LA's economy. These percentages translate into $481.7 Billion for the state of California and $91.4 Billion for the city of Los Angeles, respectively.

These large numbers also represent an even larger problem when it comes to workforce, digital and economic equity; the gap is even larger. To the tune of $28.9 Billion of annual revenue, income and wealth deprived from going into LA’s Black communities.

Why L.A.? No other state comes close to these numbers! Here’s 7 reasons why:

Los Angeles has a flourishing tech hub, offers a diverse work culture, inclusive workplaces, opportunity to work from home, chance for relaxation, chance to network and push your tech career forward and most of all amazing salaries.

Demographically while the industry may advocate for diversity and inclusion the numbers say otherwise. When 67% of the state's tech employees are white and 83% 0f tech executives are white the picture painted is pretty clear. A closer look at the tech industry’s diversification shows a workforce that includes 20% Asian, 8% Latino and 7% Black (including 3% Black women and only 2.7% Executives). One could argue what diversity might look like but the economic impact of this data is a totally different and more startling discussion.

The Blacks in Technology Los Angeles Chapter is poised to have a significant impact on the tech industry in Los Angeles. By providing resources and support to Black individuals in the tech sector, the chapter is helping to increase the representation and visibility of Black professionals in the industry. The chapter also helps to foster a sense of community and promote networking opportunities, which can lead to new business ventures, partnerships, and collaborations. The chapter's efforts to drive diversity and inclusion in the tech industry are expected to have a ripple effect throughout the industry, leading to a more inclusive and innovative tech ecosystem in Los Angeles.
